This painting is the very definition of "self-taught", evidenced by the artist's signature repeated three times in the lower left corner of the canvas. Although Ms. Olsen appears to have approached this portrait with a boldness and confidence not often found among thrift store masters, she obviously felt that her signature must have needed some work.
