Yet another donation from the incomparable Andy and Amy Lester. I'm wondering if this painting is a subtle commentary on the Dutch tulip trade and the dehumanization e.g. miniaturization of the people involved in this rough-and-tumble business. The simple tulip farmer Hans and his lovely wife Greta have been reduced in stature to a matter of inches while the tulips have been given a substantial weight and appearance. Reportedly, top flowers go for hundreds of dollars (along with bragging rights), but is society's "business at any cost" attitude really worth the loss of our collective humanity? I think Mr, Rogers might have something to say on the matter ......
